Often people end up requiring tooth extractions due to particular circumstances. After the extraction, it is crucial to take proper care of the teeth to avoid pain and facilitate healing. Make sure to take care of these dos and don’ts while performing the aftercare. Consult a Parkland cosmetic dentist for more information.

The Do’s

  • Refrain from eating immediately

Do not eat or drink right after getting your tooth extracted. Blood clotting around the extraction area takes some time, so avoiding food or beverages is crucial. After 45 minutes, you can eat ice cream or chilled milk. Make sure to avoid using straws for drinking water and consume only soft food items after the surgery for a few days.

  • Use a gauze pad to stop bleeding.

After the extraction, you will bleed for a significant amount of time. Make sure to keep the cotton gauge given by the dentist for at least 50 minutes after the extraction surgery. If the flow of bleeding is very heavy, bite down on the gauge with pressure. It will help in stopping the bleeding.

  • Using ice packs for relief

It is common to feel sensitivity after the extraction. The patients may feel extreme pain after the surgery. The patients can use an ice pack to reduce swelling and keep the pain in check. Keep the ice pack around your mouth for 20-25 minutes for pain relief.

  • Make sure to brush softly.

Brush your teeth with gentle pressure and avoid brushing near the extraction site. Blood clotting occurs after extraction, and harshly brushing that area may ruin the clot. This can cause severe issues, so avoid it by brushing as softly as possible.

The Don’ts

  • Do not smoke after the extraction.

Smoking must be avoided after the extraction as it can weaken the blood and promote the formation of dry sockets around the extraction area.

  • Do not eat solid food items.

Food items that require you to bite them with force must be avoided after extraction. This can damage the blood clot formed around the extraction area and significantly damage your healing process. Make sure to eat soft food only after the extraction. You can eat hard food items after a day or two.

  • Do not take painkillers.

If you are experiencing extreme pain and swelling, do not resort to painkillers like aspirin. They can slow down the formation of clots and negatively impact healing. It can worsen the complications, so make sure to avoid them at all costs.
