When your liver isn’t able to perform its usual functions like producing bile for digesting food or clear your blood with some toxic substances, we can say it is the onset of liver failure. The reason behind this damage could be any underlying infection or alcoholism or even genetics.

Someone might ask – what are symptoms of liver failure? Although, the symptoms are silent, it is imperative to learn and recognize some early symptoms to liver disease. Some of the common ailments you might experience are:

  1. Digestive problems – heartburn or acid reflux
  2. Skin infections – itching or eczema and psoriasis
  3. Side effects of medication – as your liver might have a tough time metabolising those
  4. Lethargy or pain in upper abdomen

Next, lets gain some knowledge on the various stages of the liver failure:

  • Inflammation

This is an early stage, wherein the liver enlarges or is inflamed.

  • Fibrosis

Herein, the healthy tissues are replaced by the scar tissues

  • Cirrhosis

Further due to severe build-up of scarring, the liver is unable to function effectively.

  • End Stage Liver Disease (ESLD)

The irreversible damage to the liver would lead to a liver transplant.

  • Liver Cancer

At any stage of the liver failure, the unhealthy cells would increase multi-fold and lead to cancer. The ones suffering from cirrhosis are the most at risk of cancer.

Regardless of being an acute or chronic liver failure, it is a life-threatening condition requiring immediate medical attention. To make sure the condition of a diagnosed person isn’t deteriorating, they are under constant observation of the doctors. If diagnosed at an early stage, this can be cured over time with requisite treatment and changes to the lifestyle of the victim. To the contrary, later stages are irreversible and can push you towards liver transplant and could lead to an inevitable end.
