Lung cancer occurs when cells within your lungs begin to grow at an abnormal rate.

Although it starts within your lungs, it can spread from there to other parts of your body. Lung cancer is considered a widespread form of cancer as many individuals are diagnosed with it every year.

The deadliness of lung cancer increases as the stages at which it is interpreted is increased. For example, if caught at an early stage such as stage 1 or stage 2, there are higher chances of survival through treatment as opposed to when it is diagnosed at stage 4.

Some of the most common symptoms that individuals with lung cancer experience are a long-lasting cough that gets worse over time, recurring chest infections, breathlessness, pain in the chest, and feeling tired most of the time.

Therefore, here are 4 causes of lung cancer:

  • Smoking and passive smoking

Smoking is one of the most common as well as leading causes of lung cancer. It is a habit that raises the chances of you getting lung cancer significantly in accordance with the number of cigarettes you smoke every day as well as the amount of years that you have smoked.

This is because cigarettes have substances that can cause lung cancer and negatively impact the cells present within your lungs. Initially, the body can fix the damage being caused; however, over time, it becomes worse. Similarly, if someone else if smoking around you, it is best to maintain your distance as passive smoking too can be a triggering factor of lung cancer.

  • Radiation

If you have had the treatment done with radiation therapy, such as treatment for a different type of cancer, radiation can lead to lung cancer.

This radiation therapy is used to kill cancer cells; however, when healthy cells are revealed to it, they can also be harmed in the process. Hence this increases the chances of lung cancer development.

  •  History

Your family history plays a vital role in the number of diseases you inherit. Studies show that the risks of a person having lung cancer can be increased if someone in the family has had a history of it.

The likelihood of someone getting lung cancer because someone in their family has also battled with it is twice as much as an average person with no family history of lung cancer. If you have had a personal account of lung cancer, then the chances of you getting it again are higher than an ordinary individual who has not battled lung cancer before.

  • Age

Although there is no specific age at which lung cancer can arise, studies show that individuals above the age of 45 are at higher risks than those younger than that age group. The most common diagnosis, however, is usually around the age of 70.

Catching lung cancer in its early stages is most fruitful because it can be treated more quickly and effectively.
